Moritzburg Castle - A fascinating Saxon history
Moritzburg Castle, originally built in 1546 by Duke Moritz of Saxony as a hunting lodge, was one of the most impressive examples of early Baroque in Saxony. It received its present magnificent appearance after a period of remodeling from 1723 to 1733 under Elector Frederick August I, also known as "August the Strong", Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. The grandiose transformation according to plans of the Oberlandbaumeister Pöppelmann led to a representative hunting-and pleasure palace, whose splendor can still be admired in its museum rooms with magnificent furniture and paintings.
