The story behind Moritzburg Castle

Moritzburg Castle was originally built as a hunting lodge under Duke Moritz of Saxony between 1542 and 1546. In the early 18th.century, it took on its current imposing form thanks to the plans of the Oberland master builder Pöppelmann, as Elector Friedrich August I., also known as Augustus the Strong,converted it into a prestigious hunting-and pleasure palace. The palace's magnificent furniture and paintings can still be admired today in the museum rooms.

The palace also became famous thanks to the famous fairytale film Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella from 1973, which was filmed here.
