Angel and Miner for Wax Candles, 32 cm, Colorful – by Richard Glässer
Light and Protection for the Holiday Season
When the days grow shorter and the scent of fresh pine fills the air, it's time to slow down and enjoy the small rituals of winter. This is when the Angel and Miner take center stage – heartfelt symbols of protection and peace, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Erzgebirge region. Handcrafted by Richard Glässer, this classic duo brings the warmth of German Christmas heritage into your home, evoking memories of childhood, comfort, and joyful anticipation.
Detailed Description and Craftsmanship
This set includes two finely crafted wooden figures – an angel and a miner – each standing approximately 32 cm tall. Carved from native woods such as maple, beech, alder, or spruce, the figures have a slender, upright posture that conveys grace and serenity. Both are mounted on sturdy round green bases that offer visual contrast and solid stability.
The angel wears a flowing white gown with red and green floral details, carefully hand-painted with precision and love. Her red wings are intricately adorned with delicate gold accents. She holds two red candle holders in her outstretched arms, designed for standard wax candles with a 14 mm diameter. Her face is painted with a gentle, peaceful expression – a gaze full of calm and protection.
Standing beside her, the miner is dressed in traditional mining attire: a black jacket with gold buttons, white trousers, and a green miner's cap decorated with the iconic crossed hammer and pick – symbols of mining heritage. His long gray hair and prominent mustache give him character and charm. Like the angel, he holds two red candle holders, so together, the pair carries four glowing candles – a symbolic source of light in the dark season.
Symbolism and Tradition
In the folk art of the Erzgebirge, the angel and miner represent more than just decorations. The angel symbolizes divine light and guidance, while the miner reflects the earth, hard work, and human resilience. Together, they are seen as guardians of the home, bringing light, warmth, and blessings – especially cherished during the Christmas season, when hearts turn toward family and tradition.
In many homes, placing these figures on a windowsill or mantelpiece is a beloved part of the holiday ritual. Illuminated by candlelight, they symbolically welcome guests and radiate a sense of peace, comfort, and belonging.
